New partnership – David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation

7 min read by Rosie Denny 21 Dec 2022

We are delighted to partner with the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation. Through a digital restructuring, we will empower the charity to continue the legacy of one of the UK’s most respected conservationists and wildlife artists.

About David Shepherd – artist and conservationist

David Shepherd (1931-2017) was one of the UK’s most respected conservationists and wildlife artists. For over 50 years, he dedicated his life to painting some of the world’s most iconic and endangered animals, selling his art to raise funds for enforcement and community projects. He set up the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation (DSWF) in 1984 to continue his work. Today, the DSWF website operates as a hub for those that wish to continue his legacy.

Challenges

The website serves both as a way for people to donate – for example, adopting an endangered animal, gifting in a Will – and as an online shop, selling David’s spectacular prints (or occasionally, original artworks). As a hub for income and as the basis for Charity Commission reporting and ICO compliance, it is critical that everything is accurately tracked and attributed.

However, over the years, the digital reporting structure had lost direction, hindering the Trust’s ability to continue its amazing work. StrategiQ is proud to collaborate with DSWF on a digital restructuring project that will meet and exceed these requirements.

Our strategy

Our work with other charities such as The Air Ambulance Service, Suffolk Mind and The University of Suffolk – plus several face to face meetings and referrals – meant StrategiQ entered into a trusted partnership with DSWF from the start. As a result, we have been able to carry out a rigorous audit, underpinning a strategy that will enable us to act swiftly to make an immediate impact while paving the way for longer-term strategic goals.

Stories, impact and action

The David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation continues its legacy with a wealth of activities, such as its DSWF Wildlife Artist of the Year competition. This year’s winner, Cy Baker, won a a £10,000 prize which includes a £5,000 cash prize and a £5,000 conservation voucher for a DSWF initiative of his choice.

What will DSWF achieve from the partnership?

Convert more browsers into donors: ultimately, the Trust needs a better understanding of what is attracting visitors to its site, what they are doing when they land and how their actions translate into income. We will redesign the data collection framework from the ground up so that this information is clear and easy to understand.

Monitor which activities are revenue generators, and which are not: as a result of the new digital framework, implementing goal tracking at a granular level will ensure that all activities are correctly attributed to different income streams/projects, helping the Trust make sound decisions.

Support the Senior Leadership Team: accurate digital reporting from the website can be used to support the reports required not only to meet the demands of the Charity Commission but provide vital intelligence for stakeholders.

Build on the Trust’s strong digital authority by addressing critical technical, structural and compliance issues that are preventing the website reaching its potential in organic search.

Target new audiences: establishing the right target keywords that the audience is searching for will help pages rank more highly in search engines as well as maximise the potential of its quality online editorial.

Why did David Shepherd choose StrategiQ?

Following a direct recommendation from The Dorchester Hotel, DSWF were referred to StrategiQ to help them audit and appraise their existing website and digital marketing performance.

During our initial audit, StrategiQ demonstrated multiple areas for improvement and opportunity in the website’s performance. This, alongside actions to increase the Trust’s visibility across organic and paid search via better utilising their Google Ads Grant and improving visibility with organic SEO.

The DSWF team were impressed with our findings and our recommendations, underpinning a solid agency/Trustee partnership to champion DSWF online.
