You wot mate? Over the years, various words and phrases have become engrained into our culture. So many, in fact, that we thought it was about time we explained a few of them.
Introducing the ‘un’official StrategiQ glossary.
Dog in the yard
Is the dog in the yard? This one really baffles new starters. And it comes up constantly when tasks are being briefed.
Which dog? What yard? What does ‘in’ mean? It’s hard to work confidently on a task if we aren’t clear on the expectations. Some people’s version of a yard might be different from others. This is the phrase we use to make sure that every part of a brief is understood by all so we can get it right, first time.
Tent pole moments
These are the big brand moments that prop up a campaign or marketing roadmap. Owning an event, launching an activation, publishing a major report. They are the moments to keep in mind, work up to and build around.

Pause moment
Agency life is fast-paced and it’s easy to steam straight ahead when there’s lots to do. But simply doing without a clear strategy leads to dead ends, flat campaigns and ideas that don’t land. When we take a pause moment, we’re asking each other, and ourselves; is this the right thing to do, right now? Does it make sense? Are we missing something?
It’s ok to get things wrong or change your mind. For us, it’s always better to stop, regroup and change direction than build something subpar.
Pick up your crisp packets
Any guesses?
This one means: look after the little things and the big things take care of themselves.
If we pick up each other’s empties around the office it becomes a nicer place for everyone. The same goes for keeping folders organised, tying up loose ends and staying on top of projects for your team. The favour is always returned eventually.
FKN great
This one always takes new starters by surprise. Kind of like an initiation, you don’t work at StrategiQ if you haven’t been caught out by this on your first day.
When Andy (our founder) asks “how are you?”, replying “not bad thanks” is the wrong answer. For Andy, this very British reply goes against what our culture at StrategiQ is all about. We’re curious, committed and for us, attitude is everything.
It’s not about toxic positivity. If you’re having a terrible day, say so. Just don’t be meh about it.

Yellow energy
The start of anyone’s journey at StrategiQ begins with taking an Insights profile assessment. This psychology-based test offers a framework for understanding ourselves, and each other, more deeply. Everyone in the agency has a unique mix of colours:
- Yellow: Creative and enthusiastic
- Red: Direct leaders
- Blue: Analytical and knowledge-seeking
- Green: Supportive and relationship-focused
So if someone is bringing ‘yellow energy’ it usually means they’re coming at something with energy and creativity – or they’re being a bit weird.

Find the Thread
The Thread is the single, connecting idea that runs through everything we do for a client, from the first conversation to the last line of code.
It’s how we make sure nothing gets lost in translation as a brief moves through the agency. Finding the Thread means identifying that core idea, and ensuring every decision ladders up to it.
North star
The North Star metric is the single most important goal a client has for their business – the ambition that every decision, workstream and activation should ladder up to.
It’s always strategy
This is our core belief as an agency. It underpins everything we do.
Now you understand our lingo, let’s talk.
Whether you’re thinking about joining the team or want to find out what we could do for your business, get in touch. We’ll find the Thread, bring the yellow energy and create some tent pole moments worth talking about.
