Welcome to The Uncertain Times

World Cup over, we shift our focus to a dating app rebrand, the future of the blog and Google’s latest roll-outs – including AI Overviews’ Top Stories and Search Console’s ‘platform properties’, which let brands see which social and video posts are driving clicks.

On the agenda this week:

  • Is the Tinder rebrand giving desperation or dynamism?
  • The traditional blog is changing – case in point, Klaviyo
  • Google’s AI Overviews got a live news feed
  • Polaroid fights for the analogue revolution with a beach activation that bites
  • Brands can finally see which social and video posts win clicks on Google, via Search Console’s new ‘platform properties’

Is the Tinder rebrand giving desperation or dynamism?

Tinder has rebranded for the first time in nearly a decade. The push behind it? Tinder monthly active users have fallen. In the US, from around 18 million in early 2022 to around 11 million recently, according to market intelligence firm Sensor Tower – with Gen Z increasingly switching off from dating apps altogether.

At the heart of it isn’t a new logo, though the wordmark has moved from lowercase to bold uppercase, and the flame icon’s been simplified. It’s a fictional persona called ‘T’, a dating columnist with the voice of Carrie Bradshaw (Sex and the City), built into everything from push notifications to ad copy. And it’s also the idea of finding your ‘Happily TBD’ – a deliberate tension, playing on the fact that Gen Z are simultaneously burnt out on dating and hopeful about new connections.

CMO Melissa Hobley described the approach as “daring and witty, but warm,” and strategy director Natalee Ranii-Dropcho said the team drew inspiration from advice columnists and Carrie Bradshaw, wanting a voice that “had the experience, but was also living alongside you.”

The reception’s spl

it. Plenty of commentators are applauding the shake-up. But branding expert Jade Horton raised a sharper question: does the new, warmer messaging actually match the experiences people have on the app?  As she put it, will Gen Z users feel the brand voice reflected back at them if they start swiping?

The StrategiQ takeaway: You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make Gen Z date on an app. This generation knows what it likes – and what it really, really doesn’t. Is this last chance saloon for Tinder?

The traditional blog is changing – case in point, Klaviyo

Take a look at a recent Klaviyo blog post and the format tells its own story. Alongside the usual byline, read time and category tag, two buttons now sit right at the top: ‘Copy as Markdown’ and ‘Set as Preferred Source’.

Taken from: klaviyo.com/blog/introducing-klaviyo-social-marketing

‘Copy as Markdown’ strips the page down to clean, structured text – exactly the format an AI model or agent wants to ingest, rather than scraping a styled HTML page. ‘Set as Preferred Source’ plugs straight into Google’s own Preferred Sources feature, letting a reader flag Klaviyo specifically as a source they want prioritised inside AI Overviews and search results going forward. Below there is also an integrated AI summary.

Put together, it’s a blog built to be read by two audiences at once: humans browsing normally, and AI systems parsing, summarising or citing the content on someone else’s behalf. The byline, date and category tags are exactly the metadata AI Overviews and answer engines look for to establish authority and attribute a claim correctly.

The StrategiQ takeaway: The blog isn’t dying, but the reader is no longer just a person scrolling – there’s also a model deciding whether to cite you. Expect this pattern to spread fast: brand content built with visible authorship, clean markdown exports and direct hooks into AI discovery features, because the alternative is being paraphrased by an AI Overview with no attribution at all.

Google’s AI Overviews got a live news feed

Google has begun rolling out a ‘Top Stories’ carousel inside AI Overviews, surfacing real-time articles from major publishers for searches about fast-developing topics such as the European forest fires this summer.

The carousel sits inside the AI-generated summary itself, pulling in timely reporting from outlets including BBC, The Times and The Guardian, and highlighting a searcher’s own ‘Preferred Sources’ where relevant.

The feature was confirmed live for mobile users in the US as of mid-July, with Google saying it would expand further but giving no official timeline for other markets or desktop. In practice, the rollout looks to be moving faster than that – we’ve already spotted the carousel live on desktop in the UK ourselves.

It’s a meaningful shift from Google’s original AI Overviews rollout in 2024, which publishers feared would kill click-through by answering questions before anyone reached the original source.

That fear turned out to be justified – zero-click search has climbed to 68% of US Google searches in early 2026, up from 60% in 2024, with AI Overviews cutting click-through by nearly 60% on the queries where they appear (data via Search Engine Land).

Top Stories won’t reverse that trend on its own, but it does carve out a specific, visible slot for timely journalism inside the AI experience, rather than treating live news the same way as static reference content.

The StrategiQ takeaway: This is Google quietly admitting that AI summaries and breaking news don’t behave the same way, and reputable, fast-moving publishers now have a specific way back into the answer box. For brands and publishers producing timely content, it’s worth checking whether you’re eligible to appear here – this is a visibility slot to fight for, not a threat to route around.

Polaroid fights for the analogue revolution with a beach activation that bites

Polaroid’s ‘The Best of Summer is Analog’ campaign has planted a giant billboard in the sand on New York’s Coney Island beach reading ‘Go jump in some water before the data centers drink it all up’ – a direct jab at the water consumption of AI data centres, delivered in about the least digital setting imaginable.

Image: Polaroid

It’s part of a wider outdoor push spanning London, New York and South Korea, including a station takeover at King’s Cross and street placements across Bethnal Green and Hackney, with lines like ‘You can’t bask in blue light’ and ‘Dance like nobody is recording’.

The campaign supports the launch of Polaroid’s new Go Generation 3 camera, but barely mentions the product itself, leaning instead on short, handwritten-style observations. It also extends into influencer territory: Polaroid paid 12 creators to go offline and announce a social media break via handwritten notes, encouraging them to spend that time on the real-world activities they’re known for online. As creative director Patricia Varella put it: “For Polaroid, the simple act of existing is already an act of rebellion…we’re deeply pro-human, and know what humanity gives us.”

The StrategiQ takeaway: Polaroid isn’t fighting AI on AI’s terms – it’s picking the least digital possible setting for its message and letting the contrast do the work. A category built entirely on ‘unplugging’ gets to make this argument more credibly than almost anyone else, and it’s using that permission fully.

Brands can finally see which social and video posts win clicks on Google

Google Search Console has introduced ‘platform properties’, a new property type that lets creators and brands track how their Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube content performs specifically within Google Search and Discover – clicks, impressions and the exact queries driving traffic to individual posts.

Image: Google

Crucially, this doesn’t require owning a verified website; you authorise a platform account directly instead.

Three reports come with it: Performance (clicks and impressions per post and query), Insights (traffic trends and top-performing content) and Achievements (click-based growth milestones). Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube are supported at launch, rolling out gradually over several weeks.

The StrategiQ takeaway: This closes a measurement blind spot – social and video content has been earning visibility in Google Search for years with no way to prove it. Brands running social-first content strategies now get first-party Google data on exactly which posts are winning organic search visibility.

The StrategiQ takeaway

The direction of travel is set. Gen Z isn’t coming back to dating apps out of nostalgia. AI isn’t leaving Search. What’s left is the response: Tinder rebuilding its voice, Klaviyo restructuring for AI readers, Google building a lane back to publishers, Polaroid making a virtue of opting out. It shows that the smartest move is rarely resisting the direction things are going. It’s figuring out what you do next, on purpose.

IT’S ALWAYS STRATEGY.
