Last Days of Ivory – Creating Awareness & Gaining Support
Last Days of Ivory is a website to create awareness and gain support to stop the unlawful killing of Elephants for their ivory. The website is a very good example of clear messaging which has been broken down into some powerful and thought-provoking sections. The homepage has a stylised and engaging animation which pulls the viewer in and invites you to want to watch the full video. The short film really does a good job of explaining exactly what is happening with the ivory trade and the real facts behind the exchange of money for ivory.
The site is like a news piece reaching out for support for the cause and its no wonder when you read the stats such as:
- An elephant is murdered every 15 minutes
- 30,000 are killed every year
- Sales of ivory are what helps to fund terrorism
The layout of the site leads you through the important and enlightening information with ease, along with the different ways you can offer your support to the campaign.
You are left feeling a number of emotions when viewing this site, it is very impactful and certainly, in terms of the core facts being made so transparent, you definitely feel you want to do something to help. I think Juan Zarate the Strategic Adviser, Paul Ottosson the Sound Designer, Kathryn Bigelow the Director and the rest of the creative team have done really well to create a very different approach to a support campaign as the creators explain:
“We felt that by making it an animated piece we would give it a broader audience – besides, the Internet is filled with graphic images of slaughtered elephants and yet the killing continues. Our desire was to help the viewer focus on the trail of money as well as the trail of blood – a relationship that Interpol and other groups unequivocally confirm.
There are real things we can all do to stop wild elephants from disappearing from our world while cutting off funding for some of the world’s most notorious terrorist networks. This site is here to help you convert your anger, your sadness and your compassion into action. Use it!”
